Safaris: Zimbabwe (articles)
Victoria Falls is strategically placed in the northeast corner of Zimbabwe, making it a perfect hub to access Botswana’s wonderful wildlife experiences. Only a 2-hour direct flight away, the fine food and wines of the vineyards near Capetown make a delicious conclusion to your safari adventure. If you crave a bit of down time by the beach, then consider the surf at Mozambique or Durban or a lakeside lodge on Lake Malawi.
While there is never a bad time to visit Zimbabwe, the best time depends on what you hope to see.
The seasons in Zimbabwe basically divide between the dry months from May to October and the rainy season running from December to March. As the dry months progress, wildlife congregates around the available waterholes, pools and shallow pans, so game viewing is spectacular. When the rains arrive the animals are likely to disperse, but the vegetation bursts into life and the bird watching is at its best.
In full flow in May/June, Victoria Falls is at its most magnificent viewed from the air, but the force of the falls makes it difficult to get close and it’s usually too misty to photograph well from the ground. The lowest flow is between October and December. While the falls then lack the thunderous impact, opportunities to get up close open up at this time of year.
