Shumba Camp is operated by Wilderness Safaris and located in the centre of the Busanga Plains in Kafue National, Zambia. The plains are inundated with water between December and May. As the waters recede during the dry season, a vast grassland attracts large numbers of game. Shumba is the local name for lion, of which several prides roam the plains around the camp. Busanga is also a key area to see cheetah in Zambia.
Shumba Camp comprises six spacious luxury safari tents on raised platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains. The rooms are large, en-suite with both indoor and outdoor showers. The dining and bar area is elevated so as to take in this vista and each morning’s sunrise; dinner takes place either here or in the cosy boma where guests can also enjoy elements of local Zambian culture. Many meals are prepared and cooked on the fire in front of the guests enhancing the safari experience. A maximum of 12 guests can be accommodated at any one time and great emphasis has been placed on the “guided” experience – being led by qualified, enthusiastic people with in-depth knowledge of the area and its wildlife.
Guests have the option of game drives in and around the Plains and night drives provide the added excitement of the nocturnal wonders of the area.
This area is best visited in the dry season,(July to October) when the plains attract large quantities of game including large buffalo herds, roan and sable antelope, wildebeest and lechwe. Predators such as lion and cheetah are often seen, plus wildogs and leopard.
Shumba works well combined with other Zambian parks such as South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, and the vast open plains provides a ecologically different experience. It can also be included as an add-on to a Zimbabwe or Botswana safari.
Mikes note: Between the months of August and October, a complimentary balloon flight over the plains is included in a three stay.
The safari camp described here, is an example of the many types of camps we can include in your Zambia safari. For more details on how best to include Shumba Camp, and costs, please contact us.0
